A former defence minister, Tobias Ellwood, has warned that people should stock up 72 hours worth of emergency supplies to be prepared for Russian cyber attacks. In the wake of the recent Marks & Spencer and Co-op attacks, which were based on Russian DragonForce malware, this is advice we should all take seriously.
Russia trialled offensive cyber warfare against Estonia, way back in 2007, and basically shut the country down temporarily. A large-scale cyberattack disrupted Estonia’s online infrastructure, affecting banks, media outlets, and government services. The attack involved botnets flooding servers with excessive traffic, overwhelming them with spam and automated requests. Since then, Russian backed criminal gangs have also turned their attention to public utilities. Also since then, Estonia has developed world class cybersecurity defences, but unfortunately Britain hasn’t learned from them.
This is what you need to stock up on:
💧100 litres of clean water
🥫Long life food which can be eaten without preparation
🕯️Candles and a working torch
📻A battery-powered or clockwork radio for news updates
💊Iodine tablets in case of nuclear fallout
💷Money, in case cash machines and card readers go down
🚑A basic first aid kit
I suggest we call them Tobias Stock
